My name is Niklas Stein, I am a psychologist, I live in Lüneburg and my favourite colour is green. Since 2019 I am doing my PhD at the University of Münster with Prof. Dr. Markus Lappe as my supervisor.

I am doing my PhD at the University of Münster and the Otto Creutzfeld Center in Münster. My projects are about eye movements and perception in virtual environments. In the past few years I worked in interdisciplinary teams in projects with research questions from psychology, computer science and cognitive neuroscience.

Work experience and Internships

Research Assistant at University of Münster (since 04/2019)

As part of my PhD, I plan and lead my own basic research projects at the Department of Psychology at the University of Münster (including eye-tracking in virtual reality, visual search, self-motion prediction), work collaboratively in international research teams, and teach seminars in the Bachelor of Science Psychology program.

Honorary Academic Appointment as a Visiting Fellow at Western Sydney University (10/2022 - 04/2023)

As part of the EU research project Platypus, I was a visiting researcher at the MARCS Institute for Brain, Behaviour and Development at Western Sydney University. I was mainly involved in a research project on head and eye movements during visual search in virtual reality.

Project Management & Data Science in a Prototype Fund Project (04/2021 - 10/2022)

As part of the Prototype Fund of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, we developed the Local Emission Framework. In addition to managing and developing the overall project, I was particularly involved there with the preparation and presentation of climate-relevant data.

Student Assistant & Tutor at the University of Münster (04/2015 – 03/2019)

In personality and general psychology, I planned, conducted, and evaluated different research projects in basic research (including eye-tracking, virtual reality, initial assessment of personality, and reaction time experiments). In addition, I served as a tutor in the master's seminar "Mathematical Methods in Cognitive Neuroscience".

Intern at Zeiss Vision Science Lab (10/2017 – 03/2018)

In the Zeiss research lab at the eye clinic in Tübingen, I developed a toolbox for the representation of distortions and blur in virtual reality. I also planned and conducted VR experiments on the perception of self-motion in distorted vision.

Intern at the marriage, family and life counselling at Bistum Münster (05/2016 – 09/2016)

In this internship, I was able to accompany many counseling sessions in couple and individual sessions with different psychologists over several months and was thus able to gain insight into the entire counseling process and the process of supervision. I also dealt with diagnostics and data evaluation in the counseling center and took over parts of the documentation work.

Intern at the educational counselling centre at Vest Recklinghausen (09/2015 – 10/2015)

During this internship, I was able to participate in initial and counseling interviews with children and parents. In addition, I participated in and conducted tests to determine IQ and support needs. I also accompanied the psychologists on visits to schools and daycare centers and attended training courses, e.g. on the subject of child endangerment.

Voluntary work

Board Work at TG Münster (06/2020 - 10/2022)

Since December 2020, I have been active as an assessor on the board of Turngemeinde Münster. I was particularly involved in the development, digitalisation and personnel management of the club.

Track and Field Coach at TG Münster & LG Brillux Münster (02/2014 - 10/2022)

Throughout my time in Münster, I was active in track & field. Accordingly, over the years I have coached many groups of all age groups from basic training to preparation for national championships. I have also organized sporting events, pandemic online training, coaches meetings, training camps and recreational activities of all kinds. I have a track & field C license and am a trained referee.

Head of Ultimate Frisbee at SC Münster 08 (06/2021 – 05/2022)

At SC Münster 08, I was in charge of the disc sports department with almost 150 participants for one year. After the department had grown strongly in the previous years, it was important for me to reorganise the many tasks in the area of membership administration and member communication and to establish a board team. For this, we wrote a new mission statement, digitalised many processes and redistributed many tasks. In particular the youth training benefited from this.

Track and Field Coach at LAV Stadtwerke Tübingen (10/2017 – 03/2018)

During my internship in south Germany, I really wanted to get involved with an athletics club in Tübingen. For half a year, I coached the U14 and U12 teams there.

Track and Field Coach at TuS 09 Erkenschwick (10/2012 – 09/2013)

I made my first experiences as a coach in Erkenschwick at the club for which I myself competed for many years. For one year, I coached my first U14 there.
